FIT FOR 55

European Commission's response to climate change is a game-changer for the battery industry

Helsinki, Finland – On the 14th of July the European Commission published the “Fit for 55”. This package is a combination of pricing, standards, targets, and support measures. They are all essential to achieve the European Union’s goal of reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 and putting it on track to reach the net-zero by 2050. The both possibilities and challenges for the battery industry are significant.

Fit for 55 sets an ambitious goal for emissions reduction. The call for electrification and sustainable solutions is no more a hint but a push – it is time to act now. All eyes are now in the industrial sector – what is our response? As a battery manufacturer, we are fit to say our word too.

Electrify

The emissions in the transportation sector come from fossil fuels. Not for long – burning fossil fuels will be remarkably cut down and, in the end, completely eliminated as the manufacturing of fuel-based passenger cars in Europe will be history by 2025. This electric transformation is driven by policies and legislation. An electric car gets its energy from the charging station, but the car itself will need a battery for charging. This opens a whole new set of possibilities for the battery industry. Besides a so-called traction battery, there is also a need for peak-shaving batteries for hydrogen cars to stabilize the high energy-need peaks. This is an ideal use case for Geyser Batteries.

Think heavily

Stronger CO2 emissions standards for cars and vans will accelerate the transition to zero-emission mobility whereas pollution caused by aviation and maritime fuels has been noted and actions taken. But did someone say heavy machinery? Electrification of heavy machinery has not yet reached the hot press – mainly because fully fit solutions are not currently available. The European Commission will change this direction. The need to lower emissions also applies to heavy machinery which will further increase the need for innovation and search for new solutions. New technologies and out-of-the-box thinking are needed to electrify heavy machinery at least on a hybridization level of hydrogen and battery. This battery could be Geyser Batteries.

Time for renewables

Renewable energy is the energy of our future - safe, sustainable and aligned with the goals of the European Commission. However, the sun does not always shine - to be efficient the renewable energy needs energy storage systems to balance the amount of energy in different times of the day and year. In this case, batteries are enablers allowing us to increase the use of renewable energy. Another ideal use case for Geyser Batteries.

Recycle

However, any battery will not do. The European Commission in its Green Deal is also setting strict standards for the recyclability for batteries. The legislation is in favor of sustainable and durable solutions that can be either reused or recycled at the end of their life cycle – the time of materialism is over. We need batteries that last longer, are safe, and use only common, easily available materials. Again, Geyser Batteries ticks all the boxes.

Get over with carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide is today’s no-no. It goes beyond words; products and industries creating carbon emissions will have sanctions. No longer can an industrial manufacturer say that he doesn’t care – carbon emissions are now everyone’s business. In the end, the most sustainable solutions with the lowest carbon footprint are the success stories of the future – a new clean era has started. As per the assessment made together with the research institute VTT, Geyser Batteries carbon footprint is one of the lowest in the industry. Also in the future, we are committed to lead the way towards sustainable electrification.
