INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT CONFIRMS LOWEST-IN-CLASS CARBON FOOTPRINT

Geyser Batteries manufacturing carbon footprint significantly lower than the industry average

Press release

Helsinki, Finland – Geyser Batteries, a Finnish cleantech startup offering its customers high-performance batteries designed on its proprietary water-based electrochemical technology, has joined forces with VTT and quantified its manufacturing carbon footprint, found it significantly below the industry average.

Battery industry is notorious for the high CO2 emissions, and sustainable energy storages for increasing electrification will play a remarkable role in the future on reaching Europe’s green goals. Currently European Union is working on a new battery regulation to legally ensure the safety and sustainability of all the batteries placed in the European market.

Geyser Batteries has calculated the GHG emissions – dominated by the CO2 – applied to production of its electrochemical recuperators (ECR). The ECR is an energy storage used for heavy-duty applications in the power grid, industrial machinery, and electric transportation industries. The calculation methodology includes the carbon footprint of Geyser’s manufacturing, as well as GHG emissions avoidance in relevant use cases, such as hybrid and opportunity-charged vehicles in mobility and industrial sectors.

The calculation methodology has been validated by VTT, Finnish state-owned leading research institution. This third-party assessment ensures that both the methodology and end results calculated by Geyser Batteries are unbiased, reliable, and trustworthy.

Based on the calculations, the carbon footprint of ECR production is up to 74% lower when compared to its closest competitor, supercapacitors. Li-ion batteries are the most common batteries in European market. In comparison with the production of li-ion batteries for heavy-duty high-power applications, the carbon footprint of ECR production is up to 40% lower. This is a significant decrease, and a big leap towards the sustainability goals of Europe’s energy storage industry.

The study also shows that the ECR is a sustainable choice for heavy-duty applications, as it uses non-toxic solvents and no conflict minerals. At least 40% of materials used for production are of renewable or recycled origin. Furthermore, ECR is fully fire-safe, and easy to recycle.

“The results of the calculation together with a third-party assessment prove that we really walk the talk what comes to the sustainability of our products. Our aim is to set example for Europe’s battery manufacturing industry and to lead way for the becoming European Commission’s Battery Regulation, which will legally ensure that batteries placed on the EU market have low carbon footprint, are circular, durable, and safe - all along their entire life cycle”, says Daria Hedberg, Business Development and ESG, Geyser Batteries.
