Mechanical & Equipment Technician

Mechanical & Equipment Technician

PUBLISHED: 28.5.2026

What is this job  about?

The R&D Mechanical & Equipment Technician bridges the gap between mechanical design and physical execution within the MRL department. This role is divided into two core mandates: ensuring the maximum uptime and calibration of daily manual/semi-automated cell assembly equipment, and fabricating/assembling custom technological fixtures and automation machinery designed by the internal engineering team.

It is a full-time position located in our Headquarters in Helsinki.

Key Responsibilities

1. Equipment Maintenance, Calibration & Repair
•    regular assembly, fitting, adjustment, and preventative maintenance (PM) of mechanical units, R&D equipment, gloveboxes, and laboratory tooling.
•    Troubleshoot and execute reactive repairs on daily cell assembly machinery to minimize operational downtime.
•    Participate in the initial setup, commissioning, launch, and technical optimization of new production and testing equipment.
•    Calibrate critical mechanical interfaces to ensure the micro-level precision required for battery cell assembly.

2. Fabrication, Machining & Prototyping
•    Perform precision machining of mechanical parts, components, and modifications using available manual workshop machine tools (lathes, milling machines, drills, grinders) within qualified limits.
•    Assemble, fit, and test custom technological equipment and jigs designed by the Mechanical Design and Automation teams for cell assembly automation.
•    Interpret technical drawings, pneumatic schematics, and mechanical blueprints to construct functional prototypes from raw materials or stock components.

3. Workshop Management & Operational Support
•    Ensure the continuous availability, organization, and proper technical condition of tools, fixtures, and safety equipment within the MRL workshop area.
•    Maintain workplace order in accordance with 5S standards, ensuring hazardous machinery and sharp tools are safely stored and maintained.
•    Manage the inventory of mechanical spare parts, hardware, and raw metal/plastic stocks required for rapid prototyping and repairs.

4. Assembly Area Support & Cross-Functional Tasks
•    Hands-on Onboarding & Operational Cover: Directly participate in day-to-day manual and semi-automated cell assembly during the initial onboarding phase to develop a deep, firsthand understanding of process nuances. Provide temporary, full-time operational cover within the assembly line during a team member's parental leave.
•    Direct Production Engagement: Perform cell and module assembly operations in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and cleanroom/glovebox requirements.
•    Quality Assurance: Participate in monitoring and controlling the quality of cell and module assembly, mechanical processing, and critical intermediate production operations.
•    Root-Cause Analysis: Identify and investigate the underlying causes of mechanical defects, equipment downtime, and process deviations within the assembly area.
•    Act as a point of contact for external inquiries via company email channels
•    Continuous Improvement: Propose, design, and implement mechanical corrective actions and technical adjustments to improve process stability, cell quality, and line productivity.
•    Data & Documentation Logs: Proactively analyze and maintain accurate production records, batch logs, and specialized reports tracking defects, downtime, and process deviations.
•    Ad-Hoc Deliverables: Perform other technical, mechanical, or operational tasks as assigned by the direct supervisor (Chief Manufacturing) to support evolving R&D and pilot line requirements.

•    Take ownership of ad hoc tasks as assigned by the Managing Director

Key Qualifications & Requirements

•    Proven proficiency in operating manual machine tools (milling, turning, drilling) with tight tolerances.
•    Strong diagnostic skills in mechanical, pneumatic, and basic hydraulic systems.
•    Ability to read and precisely execute complex mechanical CAD drawings and engineering specifications.
•    Basic knowledge of TIG/MIG welding and basic electronics/sensors is an advantage.
